Cleveland, OH – Sunday, June 6 at about 3:45 PM, Saint Martin de Porres High School’s 62 seniors will march down St. Clair from their school at East 61st to the Slovenian National Home at East 65th. They will march in blue caps and gowns for their commencement ceremony, representing academic achievement in a city and in a neighborhood that graduates too few from high school and even fewer from college. They will be escorted by faculty and staff, board members, the Saint Martin Drumline, alumni, junior National Honor Society members, and Ohio State Senator Nina Turner, who will also serve as the keynote speaker.
“As we marched down St. Clair for our first graduation ceremony in 2008, we realized what a powerful symbol our march was so we have continued that tradition. Our young men and women are certainly not symbols, though, they literally represent a brighter future for Cleveland because they have been provided with opportunities that have prepared them for college, career, and life success,” said Founding President Rich Clark.
The June 6th ceremony will be just the third commencement ceremony in the school’s brief but distinguished history. Each class has boasted a 100% graduation rate and a 100% college acceptance rate. Additionally, Saint Martin’s first two graduating classes have direct college enrollment and college persistence results that top national rates by as much as 20 percent. Members of the Class of 2010 will attend schools such as Case Western Reserve University, Denison University, Miami University, Oberlin College, Ohio University, and Spelman College.
