Wadsworth, Ohio – Reform Immigration for America, a united campaign that brings together individuals and grassroots organizations with the mission to build support for workable comprehensive immigration reform were pleased with the actions of the City Council of the City of Wadsworth on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. At the council meeting, a majority of the City Council voted to withdraw Resolution 10-10, which would have supported Arizonas SB 1070. There were many residents of Wadsworth that spoke against the resolution as well as others from faith-based organizations that came from nearby areas such as Akron, Wooster and Apple Creek.
Local Wadsworth resident Eduardo Escudero said, “I have been watching and reading about this debate happening in my City Council and I just had to come and say that I do not support passing this resolution. I have been living in Wadsworth for almost twenty years and I am pleased that it was withdrawn. Passing this resolution would have affected me, local business and community relations.”
“I think what was key in this vote were local Wadsworth resident coming together, calling their city councilperson, testifying and telling their personal story stated Ruben Castilla Herrera, Ohio State Director for Reform Immigration for America. “Then, we saw bold leadership from the members of the council by recognizing that passing this resolution was not going to help the City of Wadsworth. I commend them for this.” he stated.
The campaign for immigration reform remains strong in the country and in the State of Ohio. Currently there is a push to to reach Ohio Senator George Voinovich, asking him to meet with immigration reform supporters and publically support the Dream Act and immigration reform.
