NHLA CELEBRATES PROGRESS ON NOMINEES, WORK REMAINS ON OTHERS

WASHINGTON , DC – The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of the 30 leading Hispanic organizations in the country, congratulated Raul Yzaguirre, whom the Senate last week confirmed as Ambassador to the Dominican Republic , and Jimmie Reyna, whom President Obama nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.



“We are delighted that the Senate at last confirmed Raul Yzaguirre whose years of dedication to our country and to the Hispanic community make him uniquely qualified to bring American leadership to such a crucial part of the world,” said Lillian Rodríguez-López, chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda. “Jimmie Reyna’s distinguished career in international trade law makes him a first-rate choice for a seat on the federal bench. While Hispanics across the U.S. can today celebrate the accomplishments of Mr. Yzaguirre and Mr. Reyna, we urge the Senate to continue to make progress on nominees for other critical positions that remain vacant.”



Raul Yzaguirre’s extraordinary career began in 1958 when he enrolled in the U.S. Air Force Medical Service, where he would serve for four years. In 1966 he was appointed special advisor to Sargent Shriver in the U.S. Office for Economic Opportunity. And in 1974 he became President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). In his thirty year tenure with NCLR, he transformed the small organization into one of the nation’s leading civil rights advocates.



Jimmie Reyna is one of the preeminent experts in the United States on international trade law, and has served as a U.S. dispute panelist for the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization. He will also soon ...
