Columbus, OH-The Ohio Hispanic Coalition and LULAC National announced today the launch of a youth and technology program in the central Ohio region called Digital Connectors. Digital Connectors is a nationally renowned program that was created by One Economy, a global nonprofit that uses innovative approaches to deliver the power of technology and information to underserved communities. LULAC National will be bringing their resources to the program to allow area Latino youth to enroll in the take advantage of this ground-breaking opportunity.
Digital Connectors is designed to empower students as well as their families and communities to use technology as a tool to enhance their lives. Through use of the most up-to-date technology and a specially created social network, young people ages 14-21 are encouraged to develop leadership skills, life skills, financial literacy and media literacy. The program also supports community development. A major program requirement is for participants to give back to their community by training family members and residents on how to use technology effectively.
One Economy launched the Digital Connectors program in Washington, D.C. in 2003. This fall with federal funding from the American Recovery Reinvestment Act and corporate matches, One Economy and the Broadband Opportunity Coalition, this country’s leading civil rights organizations will significantly expand Digital Connectors programs throughout the United States.
The ultimate goal of the program is to prepare young adults to enter into a society that is centered on technology. Digital Connectors seeks individuals who might not otherwise have access to services that the program offers to help them build their leadership and workplace skills to enter into the 21st century workforce.
