The Intergenerational School, one of Cleveland’s highest-performing public schools, is opening a west side campus this fall. The Near West Intergenerational School will open in September with kindergarten through fourth-grade. The school will add a grade each year, ultimately growing to kindergarten through eighth-grade by 2015.
The Near West Intergenerational School is a free public school that features a safe school environment with zero tolerance for fighting or bullying, only 16 students per class, and a highly individualized curriculum. This innovative model has won national awards and earned an Excellent rating from the Ohio Department of Education for seven years. It has the look and feel of a private school, but does not charge tuition.
“We have a strong track record of understanding and meeting the individual needs of each of our students,” said Near West Intergenerational School Principal Debbie Fisher. “It’s an approach that our families really appreciate.”
Jodene Velazquez, the Near West Intergenerational School’s Operations Manager, is excited to be serving Cleveland’s Hispanic community. “The families that I have talked to are really happy to have a good school for their children,” said Velazquez. “Our west side neighborhoods need more safe and effective schools.”
A limited number of kindergarten through fourth-grade spaces are still available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Near West Intergenerational School will be holding Family Information Sessions at the St. Malachi Center in Ohio City at 5:30 pm on July 26, August 2, and August 9. Interested families can call 216-721-0120 for more information, or visit www.nearwestschool.org for an online enrollment form.
