April is Fair Housing Month and thirty-nine years after the enactment of the Federal Fair Hosing Act on April 11, 1968, Government agencies still received the highest number of housing discrimination complaints ever filed in a single year, according to an annual fair housing report released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Locally, The Housing Research & Advocacy Center releases, “The State of Fair Housing In Northeast Ohio: April 2006”. This report states there are over 33,000 instances of housing discrimination a year against African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, and Asian and Pacific Islanders in Northeast Ohio.

The City of Cleveland has a Fair Housing Board and Fair Housing legislation to enforce Fair Housing rights. The City of Cleveland Ordinance 665.01 provides, “to assure that all persons have full and equal opportunity to consider all available housing for themselves and their families within the City without discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, ethnic group, Vietnam-era or disabled veteran status, familial status, marital status or ancestry, and to promote a stable, racially integrated community.”

The City of Cleveland has a broader base of protected classes than the State of Ohio Fair Housing Laws or the Federal Fair Housing Act. If you feel you have been discriminated against in the sale or rental of a home, lending, or homeowner’s insurance purchase, call the Fair Housing Board. To reach the City of Cleveland, Fair Housing Board call (216) 664-2018 or in Spanish (216) 664-2019.
