The Cleveland Indians today announced plans to honor Cleveland’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (R.B.I.) Sr. Division Boys team prior to the 7:05PM game against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday, August 1. This team will be representing our city in the Mid-Atlantic Regional R.B.I. tournament. The talented team beat Detroit, MI to win the championship held in Pittsburgh, PA. July 12-15. The tournament is sponsored by Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association.
The boys, ages 19 and under, were chosen in tryouts for those playing on Cleveland Baseball Federation Connie Mack/R.B.I. teams. The players beat teams from Pittsburgh, PA; Indianapolis, IN; Gary, IN; and Detroit, MI to advance and represent the Mid-Atlantic Region in the R.B.I. World Series held in Compton, California August 7 - 12.
Players on the team include: Cory Douglass, Morris Jones, Pete Guerra, Zach Justice, Patrick Harrett, Alex Erazo, Aaron Hulswitt, Ramon Tate, Rinaldi Santiago, Joseph Sciuva, Michael Neace, Robert Gabriel, Charles Leftridge, Terrelle Tanton, Matthew Batie.
Coaches: Pedro Guerra, Luis Erazo, Javier Smith, Chuck Smith, Leroy Suarez. The team manager, Pedro Guerra, is a Cleveland Police Officer. Cleveland native, Charles Smith, grew up and played at Marion Motley Field. He went on to graduate from John Adams High School and was successful in his baseball career. Smith was a starting pitcher for the Florida Marlins in 1998, 1999 and 2000.
The Senior Girls Team R.B.I. team, representing Cleveland, finished as runner-up in the girls Fast Pitch Softball Mid-Atlantic Tournament. They defeated Indianapolis, IN & Detroit, MI, but lost to Pittsburgh, PA.
