13 year old Cassandra Nieves never would have imagined she would enter her first major boxing tournament and walk away winning a medal and winning her class. To make it that much special, this was her very first amateur boxing match.

The event was this year's Junior Olympic Regional Boxing Tournament held at the Cleveland's Salvation Army facility on Hough Avenue during the weekend of May 24th. The two-day boxing tournament drew an impressive list of amateur boxers in all weight classes.

Cassandra won her class by defeating Chelsey Bradford in a 2nd round technical knockout. In the corner was her trainer, Flex Sanquiz - head trainer at Raul Torres Boxing Academy.

The 13 year old lives in Elyria Ohio and trains at the Raul Torres Boxing Academy on Sackett near Metro General Hospital on the west side of Cleveland. She attends Westwood Junior High School in Elyria.
