+ Ashtabula Covered Bridges



Nation's longest covered bridge dedicated, named in ceremony

Like the structure it identifies, the name of the longest covered bridge in the nation is lengthy: Smolen-Gulf Bridge, Ashtabula County Highway 25. The new covered bridge, No. 17 for Ashtabu la County, was recently dedicated and named during a ceremony blessed with perfect weather and a large crowd, about 1,500.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum's plan to let New Yorkers sample the museum holdings in a small Manhattan-based annex sounds like a great way to get visitors interested in coming to the real thing here in Cleveland. It's a smart promotion for the Rock Hall, which has been trying for a few years to dream up new ways to boost its 500,000 or so annual attendance.

Reviving river life

The Cuyahoga River is on fire again. This time, it's from sparks of innovation that are fueling flames of environmentalism and could stoke the business prospects of three local companies. The three companies, along with Cuyahoga County, local universities and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, have undertaken efforts to restore aquatic life to the last 5.6 miles of the Cuyahoga, which often is alive w ith big lake freighters but little else. The goal is to make that final stretch of the river habitable to the many species of fish that attempt to use the river each year to spawn — an effort that may create a new industry ...
